Renee Wolff Email and Phone Number
I have recently graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.S. in Microbial Biology and a concentration in Host-Pathogen interactions. Since reading "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston my sophomore year of high school, I have been fascinated by infectious diseases- from disease pathogenesis, diagnostic testing, to treatment. I'm currently employed by USDA FSIS OPHS as a microbiologist and I have gained valuable on the bench experience through the Chemistry 1A Stockroom in the College of Chemistry at UC Berkeley, in addition to research experience in both the Blackman and Ryan Laboratories in the College of Natural Resources at UC Berkeley. I have taken a myriad of immunology, chemistry, microbiology, and genetics courses that have prepared me with the tools needed to work in various fields in the life sciences.

MicrobiologistUsda-Fsis Jun 2023 - PresentWestern Laboratory, Albany, CaWorking to protect the public from food-borne infections, such as from Shiga Toxin E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, caused by consumption of adulterated poultry, meat, eggs, canned, and RTE foods. Familiar and comfortable with software such as LabWare LIMS, 3M Detection technology, and mass spectrometry, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization (MALDI) for confirming bacterial species. Familiar and comfortable with microbiology techniques such as streaking for isolation, aseptic skills, handling of BSL-2 pathogens, inoculating agar plates and broths, single and multichannel pipetting, isolating bacteria from the environment, preparing media, etc. -
Chemistry Stockroom AssistantUniversity Of California, Berkeley, College Of Chemistry Jun 2021 - Aug 2023Berkeley, California, United StatesPreviously worked in the Chemistry 1A instructional support facility to set up experiments for the Chem1A lab course at the University of California, Berkeley. Some of my day to day tasks included creating solutions, cleaning glassware, conducting standardizations to check molarity with Vernier LabQuest, conducting acid-base reactions and neutralizations, weighing and distributing fine powders and chemicals, helping students, and logistical tasks such as creating Set-Up/ Take-down sheets and Sweep sheets. As one of the stockroom leaders, it was also my job to train new hires and to ensure that employees are abiding by safety protocols regarding PPE and handing/ disposal of dangerous chemicals. -
Research Assistant In The Ryan LaboratoryUc Berkeley, Rausser College Of Natural Resources Sep 2022 - Dec 2022Berkeley, California, United StatesPreviously worked under the mentorship of Doctor Kathleen Ryan to understand the roles of distinct lipids in bacterial resistance to antibiotic and environmental stresses. In the Ryan laboratory, I worked with the gram-negative bacteria Caulobacter crescentus and its ability to survive without lipid A, which serves an important function of anchoring lipopolysaccharide to the outer leaflet of the outer membrane. We aimed to study the mechanisms that support viability of this Gram-negative bacteria in the absence of lipid A in varying environments and the detriments this has on the outer membrane structure. -
Research Assistant In The Blackman LaboratoryUc Berkeley, Rausser College Of Natural Resources Feb 2022 - Aug 2022Berkeley, California, United StatesPreviously worked on a project in the Blackman Laboratory focusing on the functional genetics of adaptive trait variation in monkey flowers. As a member on this project, I extracted DNA from various monkey flower samples in addition to doing green house work, such as taking care of plants and creating inbred lines for future experiments. The focus of the project was to understand how stress environments impacted the frequency and location of transposable elements in the monkey flower genome, with the belief that TE insertions into genes caused mutations that confered adaptation to drought or high temperature environments. -
Financial AssistantHelen'S Cycles May 2019 - Aug 2019Santa Monica, California, United StatesCompleted statement and account reconciliations and tracked discrepancies by ensuring proper contact with other store locations and locating sale slips.
