About Renee Stirling Richards

I am secondary school teacher with many years of experience in scientific research and education. I have worked on a versatile array of research projects in the context of government, academia, clinic and industry including:-Prostate cancer biology and biomarker development. Here we discovered that the body-fluid derived microRNA biomakers of prostate cancer differ depending on the underlying genetic sub-type of the cancer.-Pre-clinical analysis of snake venom-derived therapeutic candidates, in collaboration with biotechnology company QRX Pharma. Our team discovered several snake venom proteins with anti-bleeding effects. These molecules are currently under further investigation.-Cellular and molecular analysis of the stress response in mammals as part of a collaborative project at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Here we showed that formation of discrete molecular structures “stress granules”, previously discovered in the Harvard laboratory, are important for cell survival following toxic cellular assault.-Critical analysis of ecologically-friendly enzyme cleaning agents as an alternative to harsh chemical cleaners in the dairy industry with the Qld Dept of Primary Industries. We generated recommendations for safe, efficient and effective application of enzyme cleaning agents.I also have a keen interest in science communication and writing for both scientists and the general public. My work has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journal and book format as well as in a public health magazine.
