After 20 years of being an airline pilot I moved to management, being Managing Director and COO of KLM since 2015.It has been a great adventure. Bringing the company from a very bad place both financially and operationally, and on customer satisfaction and staff engagement, to the best years in the history of KLM in 2018 and 2019. Years with record passenger numbers, record number of daily flights and destinations, record profit and record customer satisfaction and staff engagement. And then we had to face the Covid-19 crisis. Leading the company through this crisis, from full operations to nearly no flights, followed by a bumpy recovery with continuous changing conditions, health regulations and travel restrictions, focusing on safety, resource optimization and the wellbeing of our customers and staff, was a completely new experience.Slowly the recovery is getting there. Now we have to find final solutions for Aviations CO2 footprint. We have been working hard on KLM's renewed sustainable strategy for 2022 and beyond. I am convinced that aviation can and will be sustainable in the future.Getting things done and connecting people is something that comes natural to me. In doing so cross-functional awareness and thinking outside the box is always part of my working method. I have gained experience in this by working in different teams and settings. I am a strong believer in the power of teams, Operational Excellence, innovation, continuous improvement, and the need to preserve our planet by creating a sustainable strategy.
