Mercachem is an independent, privately held, contract research company, which offers a wide range of chemistry services to support research and development programs to companies across the globe.At first, my tasks mostly covered organic synthesis and related work. When MercaChem added medicinal chemistry services to its portfolio, I started working in this field (approx. for 4 years). The aim of these medicinal chemistry projects is to further improve the properties of the molecules and to develop them into clinical candidates.Main responsibilities:• Synthesis and analysis of a wide variety of compounds• Project management and external communication with clients• Coordination of screening of synthesized compounds at other CROs • Processing of screening results in databases and reports• Literature research• Quotations for costs and feasibility

Title PhD-thesis: Synthesis of glycodendrimers and glycopolymers and their evaluation as multivalent inhibitors of bacterial adhesionIn search of alternatives to conventional antibiotics various multivalent compounds have been synthesized, which were designed to inhibit binding of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to human cells. This bacteria species is known to be highly resistant to a wide range of antibiotics. Some strains have even been reported to show multidrug resistance. Since the synthesized anti-adhesion compounds seem to be able to inhibit bacterial binding to cells, which is the first step of infection, these type of compounds might form a solution to the antibiotic resistance problem.Thesis defense on 13 April 2005 in UtrechtPromotor: Prof. Dr. R.M.J.
