I am proud to be an Eagle Scout. I recently returned to Scouting, and serve as an adult volunteer. This means that I’m able to marry the passion I have for teaching with the core values of the program.I find that Scouting is vibrant & diverse. I love celebrating & exploring our commonalities as well as our differences. Scouting also uses an EDGE model to teach:EDGE--Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, and Enable. For example, when we teach the Scouts about Fire Building and Fire Safety. We start by 1. Explaining the Why?—the importance of being able to build a safe fire (warmth, light, cooking, signaling, etc)2. We then Demonstrate the How?—(step-by-step (fuel, heat, oxygen, etc.). 3. Next comes Guided Practice, after checking for understanding we let them practice the skills in a safe environment, and help them meet with success.4. We then Enable them to build a fire on their own. Here is where we can test their mastering of skills and knowledge.This simple approach also works with adult learners for both technical and soft skills. The only difference is that with adults, the Fist Step is crucial. Adults must know: Why it is important for them to master a new skill or knowledge.In my experience, every course objective has to be articulated and revisited for the student to invest their time/concentration into the learning. Adults have to know, “What’s in it for me?
