  • Mclaren Automotive Ltd
    Engineering Graduate
Mclaren Automotive Ltd Sep 2018 - Aug 2020
  • Usev
    Team Manager
    Usev Sep 2016 - Sep 2018
    Glasgow, United Kingdom
Website: www.usev.co.ukChiefly responsible for managing a team of approx. 75 multi-disciplinary members, in which we design, manufacture and test a highly efficient prototype vehicle. The current vehicle is a 3 wheeled, single seated, battery electric vehicle designed for efficiency - not comfort.I ensure that the technical, corporate and social components of the project integrate in order to meet the team goals of technical innovation, professional development and member enjoyment. Currently these goals are effectuated by participation in the Shell Eco-Marathon Europe (an internationally renowned competition for fuel efficient concept vehicles).Directing the sub-team managers, I ensure the delivery of a working car safely, within budget, and on time. Having received formal training in conducting Risk Assessments and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) assessments, it is my role to ensure safe working practices are established and executed. Furthermore, I work with the Treasurer and Marketing team to obtain financial support and ensure that it is utilised effectively to enhance the success of the team. Establishing corporate image is carried out through social media campaigns and attending events such as Offshore Europe and the All Energy conference. As a member focused society I endeavor to encourage the professional development of members by ensuring they are equipped with valuable experience in a range of skills that will be useful in industry. Project management and teamwork skills are inherent in the project. Technical skills in topics such as electronic systems design, FEA, CAD and manufacturing skills (such as carbon fibre layup) are developed through the application of research and knowledge exchange between the members. This role has developed my management skills, required me to think on my feet and has helped me to further nurture my tenacity to get results.
  • Advanced Forming Research Centre, University Of Strathclyde
    Student Intern, Machining Team
Advanced Forming Research Centre, University Of Strathclyde Jun 2017 - Aug 2017
During my internship with the AFRC I gained experience in an R&D role that enable me to think creatively to produce commercially viable process methodologies. Throughout, I was responsible for managing my project within in a team environment and a brief overview of my main work is provided below.• Researched the topic of ‘machinability’ and developed a commercially viable methodology to characterise materials with a machinability index. This involved a review of literature, speaking with industry professionals and then applying the theoretical knowledge to a practical environment to determine the commercial feasibility of the process. • Investigated various analytical machining tools to evaluate their suitability for integration into the AFRC machining toolkito Researched suitable tools, dealt with suppliers and secured trial loanso Reviewed literature to determine how to maximise benefit from toolso Conducted practical machining trials to further diagnose tool suitabilityo Delivered a technical presentation summarising findings and advising whether purchase of the tools is a worthwhile investment
  • University Of Strathclyde Eco-Vehicle Team
    Chassis Team Manager
University Of Strathclyde Eco-Vehicle Team Sep 2016 - Jun 2017
As sub-team manager I co-ordinated with other teams to ensure the successful integration of vehicle components to produce a highly efficient vehicle. I managed and developed a team of 15 students to design, analyse, manufacture and test a chassis for the basis of our vehicle. This involved overseeing and partaking in technical tasks including:o Structural design and analysis using computer aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis (FEA).I was heavily involved in the development of a fully parametric CAD model of the chassis which allowed every dimension of the chassis to be modified by changing a value of the suitable parameter. This allowed for rapid modification of the design which proved useful in the first year when other aspects of the vehicle design were constantly changing. It also allowed for suggested design enhancements to be quickly analysed using FEA to enhance decision making.o Material research – selecting, sourcing and validating materialsAs a team we used Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES) to make material selection strategies. We also faced several supplier issues and manufacturing problems which allowed great opportunity for application of theoretical engineering material knowledge. In the end, the chassis was constructed from aluminium 6063-T6 (despite ordering 6082-T6). We also had the chassis heat treated after welding to recover some of the structural integrity of the heat affected zones. o Prototyping, manufacture and testing of chassisTo validate the structural integrity of the chassis we conducted strain gauge tests which proved successful. This was then confirmed when the chassis successfully passed all technical requirements and proved to be effective. As it was the first year of the team, efforts were focused on ensuring the longevity of the team through the development of members. In addition, a lot of time also went into overcoming the inevitable problems that the initial year brings.
  • Wrightbus
    Student Placement
    Wrightbus Jun 2015 - Aug 2015
    Based At En-Drive, Antrim
Based at the chassis design and manufacturing facility, EN-Drive, I carried out problem solving and design. I was presented with a design problem which allowed me to apply and develop my independent problem solving skills whilst following company protocols in a professional engineering environment.I produced 3D models & drawings using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. This helped to enhance my CAD skills and also professional engineering skills by working with colleagues to ensure a high standard.Working alongside the stress engineers, I helped conduct friction tests to verify a finite element analysis software model. This was to ensure passenger safety in the event of rollover. This allowed me to gain experience in conducting professional engineering testing and also to see the theory of structural mechanics put into practice in a real life situation.During my placement I also conducted bill of material (BOM) audits - using BOMs, engineering drawings and CAD models to verify correct parts were being used and proper workshop manual procedures (WMPs) were being followed. This gave me an in-depth insight into the manufacturing processes involved in modern day engineering. This also allowed me to see the relationship between the various stages of engineering design and manufacturing and how these processes are managed in industry.
