Growing Water Smart (GWS) is a joint-program of the Sonoran Institute and Lincoln Institute of Land Policy’s Babbitt Center. GWS is addressing a critical need by empowering local government leaders with the full range of communications, public engagement, planning, and policy implementation tools to realize their watershed health and community resiliency goals. As Program Manager for the Sonoran Institute's Growing Water Smart (GWS) program, I led the program's initiatives in Arizona, the GWS Peer-to-Peer Network, and collaborated on the development of a new transborder GWS program to support communities along the US-MX border. I also provided support to the GWS's portfolio of projects in Colorado that serve to better integrate land use and water management for decreasing water demand.

I am a Research Intern sponsored by the National Science Foundation and hosted by the USDA Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry. I am conducting social science research on urban systems, resilience to extreme weather events, urban knowledge systems and governance, social networks, and environmental stewardship in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I am supporting the work of major social-ecological research projects that the IITF is involved with: The San Juan Urban Long-Term Research Area (ULTRA) and the Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network (UREx SRN) projects. During this internship, I am mastering data visualization skills including the use of Adobe Illustrator to produce creative infographics for distilling technical scientific data for public use.

The Resilience Planning Networks (RPN) is a research project funded by the National Science Foundation and conducted by a team of researchers at Texas A&M and Arizona State University.Research Project Summary:Costs from flooding continue to rise because of the isolation in most communities of hazard mitigation planning from land use planning processes. Resilience planning that recognizes the interdependencies between disasters and the constant stressors cities face, such as poverty, aging infrastructure, and social inequity, has emerged as a new framework to coordinate flood mitigation and planning. This project examines how resilience is translated into practice, whether it fosters collaboration across city departments and stakeholders, and if this collaboration leads to more integrative plans that reduce vulnerability to flooding. New knowledge will be acquired regarding how resilience planning shapes urban governance at a time when flooding poses an increasingly serious threat for communities. By combining surveys, interviews, social network analysis, and plan evaluation in four cities at the forefront of resilience planning, this study provides critical and timely information about the governance structures and planning processes that address long-term flood risk. Specifically, the objectives of this study are to: (1) examine how public, private, and community actors who are engaged in flood mitigation efforts interpret and operationalize the concept of resilience; (2) characterize inter-organizational connectivity around flood resilience planning by analyzing urban governance networks with social network analysis; (3) assess and compare the quality, consistency, and level of integration among different types of city plans that impact flooding; and (4) evaluate the influence of different conceptualizations of resilience and governance network structures on cities? plans and policies. Overview of Research Team (The Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network):The UREx SRN focuses on integrating social, ecological, and technical systems to devise, analyze, and support urban infrastructure decisions in the face of climatic uncertainty. This NSF-funded project is an international collaborative effort of partner cities in North, Central, and South America. The project's goal is to research and scale strategies and infrastructure to make urban cities more resilient in the face of extreme climate events such as coastal flooding, droughts, and severe heat.My experience/skills:• Interdisciplinary experience working with city planners, city public works managers, researchers, community leaders, and other city, state, and federal government officials on urban resilience research and projects toward building resilience to extreme weather events such as drought, heat waves, urban and coastal flooding.• Created and secured funding for a research project titled Creating Social Value Through Climate Resilience Projects which documents how city planners and engineers incorporate social value into their city planning and resilience projects. • Experience mentoring US and international undergraduate and masters level students on UREx SRN related projects • Experience working on a global sustainability research network in North America, South America and the Caribbean• Expertise in scenario workshop development and facilitation, multi-stakeholder survey administration and analysis, leading large interdisciplinary research working groups and task forces, NSF grant proposal writing, science communication

I served as a Research Intern for Ciudadanos de Karso (CDK). I was contracted by the International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF) through CDK to support on-going IITF social-ecological research projects such as the Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network project.
