I work to extend the reach, role, and nature of “human-centered design (thinking),” mostly so it can better address social and environmental issues and enable others (including businesses) to do so. I teach courses (e.g., at the Austin Center for Design), lead/facilitate workshops (public & private), give talks, moderate panels, & conduct interviews on stage, organize events (e.g., for Stanford Medicine X), advise & mentor (e.g., for the Health 2.0 TECHquality diversity initiative), write, and do research/design/strategy projects.Areas of great passion: 1) helping businesses become more socially & environmentally responsible; 2) fixing our broken healthcare system; 3) ending homelessness; 4) increasing diversity & inclusion in the workplace (particularly via eliminating ageism); 5) achieving complex systems change; 6) design education, development, & leadership; 7) attending & participating in professional & cultural events; 8) good conversation.Recently: - “Theory of Interaction Design & Social Entrepreneurship” course (Austin Center for Design, Spring 2019); - “Design as Activism” talk (General Assembly, User Experience Design Immersive, April 2019 in Austin); - “The Walking Gallery of Healthcare” panel organizing & moderation (Stanford Medicine X, February 2019 in San Francisco); - “Business as Usual Will No Longer Suffice…” writing (January 2019); - “In With the Old, In With the New” talk (BayCHI, December 2018 at PARC); - “Opening Doors that have been Closed by Ageism, The Under-the-Radar Diversity Issue” workshop (Austin Design Week, November 2018); - "On What it Takes for Companies to Move Toward Social and Environmental Responsibility, How We Might Help, and What that Means for Design — My Conversation with Marc Rettig" writing (September, 2018); - "On What it Takes to Effectively Design the Future of Healthcare — My Conversation with Joyce Lee" writing (September, 2018); - "Is It Ethical for Designers to Function as Activists When Practicing Their Profession? If So, When? If So, How?" talk (Interaction Design Education Summit, February 2018 in Lyon, France).I’ve held multiple leadership positions internationally (e.g., Principal, OE Strategy; Digital Agenda Leader, Viant Business Innovation; Director User Research & Experience Strategy, Sapient; Editor-in-Chief, interactions; Local Chapters Chair, ACM SIGCHI Executive Committee) and worked in and with multiple types of organizations (e.g., corporations, business consultancies, design firms, non-profits).
