About Rich Berry

I joined IBM in 1984 following my graduation from University. I started as a trainee network system programmer and held a variety of technical, project management and business coordination roles until in 1996, I was appointed to my first Management position. At the end of my employment with IBM, my position was that of senior “first line” Manager working in IBM’s Telecommunications group where I managed the Customer Network Design & Implementation Department. In June 1999, the IBM Global Network “connectivity” group was sold to AT&T. I was “TUPEed” across along with 600 colleagues in UK, 5000 worldwide. Since the transition, I have held a series of senior department management and Programme Management roles reporting directly to company executives in the AT&T EMEA Senior Leadership team. In July 2003 I was appointed as Director of the EMEA Country Services Operations function. This function included upto 375 employees across 30 EMEA countries.     I have directed a group of over 300 people across 30 EMEA countries. This involved establishing organisational management structures, financial management of a budget exceeding $30m, setting direction, defining mission, goals, objectives, business metrics and management systems. It also involved defining and executing business transformation projects to outsource, eliminate or centralise activities to implement our corporate strategy.

    I was responsible for improving the linkage between the “AT&T Finance user community” and the “AT&T IT Systems technical community”. This involved learning the business language of finance people (!), developing a common language between all parties in the context of Process Engineering concepts, Project Management concepts and Service Delivery concepts. We were then able to systematically review business requirements, critical business processes, dependencies on IT and then establish and drive a prioritised programme of change. At this time, Sarbanes-Oxley legislation was introduced and I had a superficial exposure to issues and principals involved.

    Manager of major IT Deployment Project Team (Peregrine Service Centre).This project had been running into problems for a period of 2 years when I was asked to take management responsibility for the deployment of this new Ticketing System. This was a global project where our interest was to assure that the globally developed product was robust enough and had sufficient functionality to meet the needs of the 2000 EMEA users, across approx 35 countries. My role was to manage the team of 6 qualified Project Managers and a core project team of approximately 20 dedicated people and as many as a 100 “arms and legs” people to deliver the deployment. We were ultimately successful in recovering the project. It was an unparalleled learning experience in my career to date.
