The water & waste plant included water supply that involved abstraction from the Vaal, floculation, filtration and treatment of water for cooling water and firewater. The Sasol 1 and Midland site CW and FW reticulation systems and cooling towers. The floculated water was treated with demineralisation and reverse osmosis to supply boiler feedwater. The waste part of this business unit included the floculation of fine ash wash water and recover of water. The fine ash was deposited on the fine ash dams which were in scope. The oily and chemical sewer water recovery plants where also in scope. The BU was also responsible for generation of steam from combustible waste streams in two boilers and an incinerator. Grey water from the plant and town were also treated in a sewerage treatment plant. The second two years I oversaw maintenance for the Sasolburg Nitro value chain (Ammonia, explosives, nitric acid and Ammonium nitrate plants). I was responsible for mechanical, electrical & instrumentation maintenance for OHSACT classified major hazardous installations. The equipment in my area ranged from bulk handling (bucket & belt conveyers), rail, normal process equipment like pumps & pipelines through to ammonia and syngas compressors, reactors, a hydrogen pressure swing absorption plant, cold storage and a small steam turbine generator. The biggest achievements were; obtaining AIA support conditions on which to operate a 10,000ton liquid ammonia storage tank that had reached end of life with significant defects. Scoping and planning february 2015 R400m shutdown which involved a siemens turbine upgrade, catalyst and catalyst basket change, a reboiler change and pressure wing absorption vessel changes.I was the legally appointed competent person (GMR2.1) on the steam, water and Nitro plants.
