About Richard Johnson

Mr. Richard "Razor" Johnson, who was sentenced to multiple life terms under the three-strike law for drug possession, embarked on a journey of social activism and spent nearly 20 years in isolation. As one of the ten plaintiffs, he fought for the release of many from the S.H.U. through federal court petitions and participated in California Prison Hunger Strike Solidarity Coalition. Ultimately, he gained his freedom through California Governor Newsom's medical reprieve initiative. While incarcerated, Mr. Johnson became a writer for publications like the Bayview and Oakland POST addressing social justice issues and providing solutions for the community in nearly a decade. Motivated by a desire to give back, he established and founded a nonprofit called Formerly Incarcerated Giving Back (FIGB), organizing significant events such as the largest historical food giveaway in Oakland and distributing gifts and resources on special occasions throughout the year (Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, Juneteenth, Back To School, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas). Today, Mr. Johnson actively collaborates with community leaders, organizations, and city officials to reduce crime, gang violence, and systemic racism. His contributions are widely recognized and appreciated by state senators, the California Governor, the Attorney General, county supervisors, the Alameda County District Attorney, the Oakland City Mayor, city council members, business owners, and clergy. In addition to his work with FIGB, Richard extends support to the unhoused (homeless) community through partnerships with organizations like Life Impact for Humanity (LIFH), providing food, necessities, housing support, and transition homes locally and globally addressing humanitarian issues of homelessness. He also collaborates with the Oakland Private Industry Council (PIC) to create employment opportunities. Currently, Mr. Johnson is employed by the 5 Keys organization, which operates throughout California, focusing on various areas including housing, education, distribution, and support for the homeless.
