Library Assistant
Working in a busy Library in North Shropshire. Assisting customers to find the information they need, my skills and experience include:During my time working at Shropshire libraries I have gained a wide range of experience, including:• Working in a variety of libraries including: Ellesmere, Wem, Market Drayton, Whitchurch and Oswestry.• A thorough working knowledge of Galaxy, the system used to catalogue and manage stock in Shropshire libraries.• Leading craft sessions with younger children at Market Drayton and Whitchurch libraries.• Prioritising tasks and switching quickly from one activity to another.• Producing displays to promote new stock, a non-fiction subject or a particular author.• One to one drop in training sessions with customers helping them to access e-books and e-magazines on their tablets using the library wi-fi.• Using a range of equipment such as self-service machines, photocopiers, computers, scanners, and microfiche readers.• Promoting e-books and e-magazines on a stall at Whitchurch Market.• Preparing and pricing books for library book sales.• Training new members of staff and volunteers at Market Drayton and Whitchurch libraries.• My experience is that asking a few questions of customers or having a brief conversation can often make the difference in terms of customer service and experience.• Cashing up and banking.• Keeping calm and patient when assisting aggressive or challenging customers.• Answering enquiries face to face, on the telephone, by email and letter.• The importance of handling personal data sensitively and securely.• Evaluating digital and analog information by asking a number of critical questions; for example, does it come from a credible source? • An excellent knowledge of authors and the Dewey Decimal System.• Taking an active role in promoting the summer reading challenge and encouraging reluctant readers to take part.
