It could well be that a lifelong passion for sailing drew me into a career in risk and safety management. A disparate as they seem, there are more similarities than differences in the skills both require. Both draw on logic and reasoning to anticipate and solve problems, and the need to look at things with a critical eye and both strategic and tactical responses. Both require active listening, taking the time to understand a situation and dig deep through questioning and assessment into the ‘why’s’ and ‘why not’s’. Today, I apply the precision required when sailing to high-risk and potentially volatile workplace environments, by making sure that risks and threats to people and businesses are reduced, mitigated or eliminated altogether. I make high risk, high volume, volatile work environments safe by managing Risk as part of the strategy and embedding it into business planning. With the foundations of my career gained in insurance, I now also apply the same complex mathematical analysis and diligence to lead organisations a superior safety status and regulatory compliance.
