About Richard Smith

Mr. Smith’s practice focuses on complex litigation, employment litigation, white collar criminal defense, transactional and third party due diligence, risk assessment, creation and review of anticorruption policies and procedures, and US-centric and transnational corporate internal investigations for public and private companies. He has extensive experience representing corporate entities, executives, and employees in connection with criminal investigations, prosecutions and civil matters. He represented the NFL Players Association and its individual players in an arbitration hearing related to allegations that certain players on the New Orleans Saints offered payments or “bounties” to teammates who purposely injured opposing players. Mr. Smith was the chair of his previous firm’s Litigation Group in the Washington, D.C. office and co-chair of its White Collar, Parallel Proceedings and Corporate Advisory Practice Group. Before entering private practice, Mr. Smith was the former Principal Deputy and Chief of Litigation for the Fraud Section of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, where he prosecuted the first cases brought under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. He also served as Counsel to the Director of the Executive Office for the U.S. Attorneys where he served as attorney-advisor to the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee and represented the interests of all U.S. Attorneys.
