Richard Chartier's graphic design practice is based in Los Angeles, California.Chartier has cultivated notoriety for his clean, minimal, formalist aesthetic in design and typography. His extensive experience in graphic design and art direction including logos, annual reports, posters, invitations, books, flyers, packaging, branding style guides, and magazines as well as websiteart direction has led him to work with a multitude of non-profit, art, culture, environmental, and educational institutions as well as for corporations and individuals.Prior to his design consulting work, Chartier served as senior graphic designer for American Association of University Women (AAUW), an association / foundation founded in 1881 dedicated to advancing equity for women & girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research and for Academy for Educational Development (AED), a multi-mission nonprofit focusing on improving education, health, environmental, and economic opportunities for the least advantaged communities in the US and developing countries. He also served as graphic designer for VSA, an international arts & disability organization founded in 1974, now part of The Kennedy Center.

Richard Chartier is considered one of the key figures in the field of sound art described as "microsound" and Neo-Modernist. Chartier's minimalist digital work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, perception and the act of listening itself. Chartier's sound works/installations have been presented in galleries and museums internationally and he has performed his work live across Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America. In 2000 he formed the recording label LINE exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism.

LINE = a programmatic sound platform with a strong inclination towards the visual arts and multimedia, born from the desire to take the tactile qualities of audio installations from the gallery space to listeners' living rooms. Since 2000 the LINE imprint, curated and art directed by Richard Chartier, has continued to publish documents of compositional and installation work by international sound artists and composers exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism as limited edition Compact Discs and DVDs.The premiere release on LINE, Chartier's Series (LINE_001) was awarded Honorable Mention in the category of Digital Music by the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica, the International Competition for CyberArts, 2001 (Austria). In 2007 LINE's first DVD release, Camera Lucida (LINE_030) by Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand accompanied by sound works by an array of noted artists was awarded Honorable Mention in the field of Honorary Mentions in the category of Hybrid Art by Prix Ars Electronica. In 2009 LINE's Colorfield Variations DVD (LINE_038) a beautiful collection of audio/visual works by an international array of artists was published.
