I was studying part time a course in mathematics while my PGCE submission was processed. During this time I also worked across Chesterfield, taking work as and when the agency offered it to me, according to the local needs of schools. I worked in small teams consisting of myself the class teacher and perhaps one or more teaching assistants. As per my training, I delivered focussed support to children one-to-one or in small groups, particularly to children with special educational needs or emotional and behavioural disorders. I worked in a number of local schools and with a variety of age groups in primary schools, secondary schools and exclusion units for expelled pupils still requiring compulsory education. In some instances (eg the exclusion unit) I asked to be briefed about children's backgrounds and proclivities towards certain activities or behaviours that triggered emotional responses or which formed barriers to learning. Also I kept and maintained records, as well as informal notes, of children's activities, for instance on how successful they had been in meeting a learning objective and I would feed this back to the class teacher as part of the formative assessment for future lessons.
