Richard is a Senior Editor, and Head of Data Visualization with McKinsey's publishing arm. Before joining the Firm he was most recently a Senior Graphics Editor with the Washington Post. Before that he was Assistant Managing Editor for Graphics and Illustration at The National Post in Canada.On a day-to-day basis Richard manages a small team of excellent data visual experts who create the bulk of the exhibits supporting McKinsey Publishing. But really that is just his day job.Talk to Richard outside of that context though, and you will quickly discover that he is a bit of a drawing fanatic. He is fervently devoted to the notion that witness-art has the singular ability to transport people into a moment, to make them think and make them feel. Throughout his career Richard has lived that role of artist and witness. As a visual journalist, he has covered conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Ukraine, embedding with Canadian, U.S. and Afghan forces. His drawings are created beside the troops in the field documenting the experience as he see it. Much of Richard's work is held by the Smithsonian Museum of rmed Forces History, and the National museum of the Marine Corp. It has not all been about conflict though. Richard has used his drawings to tell stories about internal displacement, hunger, disease and famine in Africa; about the struggles of homeless veterans, wounded warriors, and survivors; about homelessness, and dying children; about refugees and migrants; and even hurricane survivors. He has documented legal drama, as a courtroom artist witnessing the trials of the Benghazi mastermind, and the Boston Marathon bomber. For Richard, art is about capturing a scene from a life, committing it to paper, and, hopefully, making people care.Richard was schooled in Design and Illustration at Dundee University, way back in the day. He now lives in Scotland. In his rare spare time Richard enjoys writing about himself in the third-person, urban sketching, teaching art, and getting "oot intae the hills oaften, likesay."
