Head Of Investment Management
Chairperson
Having experienced a great community street party in a nearby town, I decided it would be fantastic to introduce something similar in my home village. Having trialled the idea in 2017, it proved to be a great success and so a small team of us have established a Community Interest Company to run the event on an annual basis. Approximately 1000 people attended the 2018 party which raised over £3000 for local organisations and charities.
Trustee
This is a registered UK charity supporting Nayamba Primary School in a rural part of Zambia. Most of the 300 children at the school would not receive any education at all without this school which is entirely funded from donations. Recent improvements at the school include; installing electricity, a new more reliable water borehole, a daily food programme so that every child gets a hot porridge drink enriched with minerals and supplements, a library and (soon) a pre-school. We are currently raising £90k to fund the building of new classrooms, teachers houses and a sanitation block. So far, £80k has been raised which covers the classrooms and teachers houses. We still badly need to build a sanitation block with toilets and hand washing facilities to replace the 3 existing drop holes!
Member Of The Finance Advisory Committee
I was a member of the committee that is responsible for advising the Dean and Chapter on all matters relating to finance.
Chairman
I was a Trustee for 4 years and Chairman for 3 of these. The hall was built as a war memorial following the ending of the 1st World War. I instigated a complete overhaul of the governance structure of how the trust operated to ensure that it complied with all Charity Commission requirements and best practice. At the same time, initiating an overhaul of the building itself through a programme of improvements to bring the hall up to date and fit for purpose in readiness for the 100th anniversary of the armistace in 2018.
Divisional Director - Head Of Charities South & South West
I was an investment manager in the Exeter office responsible for dealing with larger & more complex accounts as well as specialising in investments on behalf of charities. I was a member of Brewin Dolphin's national charity team with responsibility for the South and South West of England. I originally set up the office for Brewin Dolphin with some former colleagues. I led the office through a period of growth that consistently put the office in the top 3 fastest growing offices out of over 40 for the entire period. The Exeter office was frequently hailed by senior management as a model office for others to follow. As a result, I was invited to sit on many steering groups and national committees for the group. As the head of an office with a multi-million pound turnover, I had responsibility for all finance, marketing, HR and business & development within the office. A promotion offer to be a regional director overseeing 7 offices led me to consider my priorities which resulted in me taking the decision in 2012 to step down from my head of office role to concentrate on the charity team role.
Trustee
I was a member of the Finance & Resources Committee for 5 years with responsibility for overseeing all aspects of finance at the academy. This was during a period of immense change and pressure created by the change in the way special schools were funded. It was also against the backdrop of the school selling its site to fund a £20m+ rebuild which added its own challenges and opportunities.
Associate Director
I trained & graduated as an investment manager and latterly specialised in managing investment portfolios on behalf of charities
Financial Advisor
My career in financial services started as a financial advisor with Prudential Assurance, at that time, the largest life assurance company in the UK with a direct sales force of 6000. I initially completed the company's basic training at their training college in Newport Pagnell. I subsequently completed the Financial Planning Certificate and advised Prudential clients on financial matters including, life insurance, pension planning and investments. It was during this time that I decided I wanted to specialise as an investment manager.
Lieutenant
Having completed my officer training at BRNC Dartmouth I trained to be a helicopter observer on the airborne early warning Seaking Mk2. My time in the RN taught me so many life skills including; determination, self reliance, the power of teamwork and the importance of leading by example. These are skills I have utilised in all of the roles I've done since.
