Free lab space has been secured for students to utilize for independently led research topics that they find interesting. I have had the opportunity to mentor younger aspiring electrochemists in the field of batteries and energy storage. Battery engineering intern for the HOTTech project investigating high-temperature and long lifetime (HiTaLL) power sources that will enable NASA missions to high temperature environments. This was my first time leading an independent battery research project to study different polymer binder that were incorporated into cathode materials with the goal of preventing the "shuttle effect" in Li-S batteries. The summer was an unforgettable experience where I juggled between: learning Mandarin (no prior knowledge), experiencing the culture (food, tourist attractions etc.) and conducting my own research.____________________________________________________________________________• Designed procedures, conducted experiments and analyzed results to characterize various binders• Used SEM, EIS and Neware to evaluate electrochemical performance• Demonstrated proof-of-concept utilizing a polymer membrane to filter long chain polysulfides• Picked up conversational spoken Mandarin during time in China• Wrote and edited manuscripts for the lab to be sent to peer-reviewed journals.• Second authorship with Ao Zhao for work with Elastic Cathode Materials

Freshman year, I spent a summer at the Advanced Light Source studying crack formation and propagation through a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) after pyrolysis processing. During my time there, I learned how to use MATLAB's image processing toolbox, Avizo 3-D imaging software and Fiji/ImageJ for data analysis.____________________________________________________________________________• Calculated 3-D geometric parameters (tortuosity/porosity/etc) by analyzing stacks of 2-D images.• Enhanced poster and presentations with interactive 3-D models from Avizo.• Generated 3-D figures highlighting the progression of structural variables along the CMC.• Halved run time of preexisting codes that process images of the CMC before pyrolysis.
