As a Research Assistant in Dr. Hui Zhao's lab, I developed and optimized experimental protocols to synthesize hydrogels with tailored characteristics, such as enhanced stickiness and conductivity, for electromyography (EMG) applications. Leveraging my prior experience with silk fibroin from my startup, I collaborated with researchers to translate experimental findings into practical applications, bridging the gap between material science and biomedical engineering. This role has honed my skills in experimental design, biomaterial development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, further solidifying my expertise in creating innovative solutions for biomedical challenges.

As Co-Founder and Research Lead of R&D Industries, I spearheaded the development of a bioresorbable, implantable biosensor prototype to enable early detection of osteoarthritis—an issue currently diagnosable only in late stages. These efforts led to a residency at Johnson & Johnson’s JLABS at the Texas Medical Center, where I utilized cutting-edge resources to build and test the prototype. Concurrently, I established the business structure, managed budgets, procured scientific and technical supplies, and led grant-writing efforts, including a competitive SBIR proposal to the NSF. I also secured a place in Antler’s Venture Capital Residency, where I crafted market strategies, refined pitch materials, and engaged with investors. Although pre-seed funding was not achieved, I successfully developed a patent-pending prototype and laid the groundwork for future commercialization.

In August 2013, the Rim Fire decimated the beloved backcountry of Yosemite National Park and Stanislaus National Forest in California. Serendipitously, the fire burned through established long-term research sites, which provided a unique opportunity to study the dynamics of post-fire microbial succession. Wildfires alter soil chemistry (depending on temperature, duration, and initial carbon source material), and up to 80% of the carbon in post-fire soils is a heterogeneous mixture of highly aromatic compounds and other compounds that are slow to decompose. The goal of this project is to understand how fire-adapted fungi respond to and utilize the unique chemistry of post-fire soils using a combination of transcriptomics and metabolomics with filamentous fungi that were isolated at various time-points after the Rim Fire. So, my job is to: (1) utilize PCRs to confirm that each fungus is what we think it is, and that there is no bacterial or other contamination. Then, (2) do a DNA extraction on each fungus to get high-quality DNA for sequencing, and (3) grow each fungus in a bunch of different conditions, then extract RNA for sequencing.
