Role listed
Engineering Designer Iii
Engineer focused on safety, traffic, and signage, including working on Vision Zero Action Plans, safety countermeasures, traffic analysis of intersections and corridors, multimodal concept designs, wayfinding placement plans, and signing and marking plans.
Engineer I/Engineering Designer Ii
Engineer working on trail design, road safety, Vision Zero, and traffic analysis.
Junior Corridor Development Engineer (Division Of Planning & Programming - Te Ii)
I initiated, managed, and designed all aspects of the in-house Express Design process for my selected projects. This included coordinating with many different NCDOT divisions and external stakeholders (including towns, counties, MPOs, and RPOs) for all aspects of the proposed design, as well as setting and managing the schedule and key milestones.I used ArcGIS software to screen for environmental constraints, produce the conceptual design in OpenRoads, complete a scoping report and compile quantities for use in producing cost estimates for right of way, utility relocation and construction. The final result was a report and final cost estimates for use in NCDOT's data-driven project ranking methodology for projects for inclusion in the STIP.As needed, I covered for the project managers who manage Private Engineering Firms (PEFs).I used Bentley OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, ArcGIS, and BlueBeam softwares.
Transportation Engineer (Transportation Planning Division - Te I)
I was the technical lead on my main project, working under the project manager. As technical lead, I oversaw most aspects of the project, including all traffic analysis, data analysis, GIS work, mapmaking, and presentations. I taught myself basic Python scripting to more optimally perform data analysis, and to automate and optimize certain repetitive tasks, particularly with spreadsheets and exported GIS data.I was able to teach myself new software, including the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Pro, to enhance both the presentation aspects and the technical aspects of the plan. I also coordinated with the Communications department to create a flyover of key corridors to show how recommendations in the plan interacted with each other to create a cohesive vision for the corridors.I engaged with stakeholders and presented in front of county commissioners, city/town managers, and the public. I kept in constant communication with our main stakeholder to make sure that the needs of their region were reflected accurately in our plans. I was able to help and teach the more experienced engineers how to better optimize their workflow and how to use the advanced features in our production software.
Transportation Engineering Associate
As a Transportation Engineering Associate (TEA), I rotated through various units to gain experience in the following divisions of NCDOT.In the Transportation Planning Division, I was able to learn basic GIS skills and techniques, as well as get a basic understanding of MPOs, RPOs, and the planning process generally. In the Value Management Office, I became familiar with Value Engineering processes, and identified projects that warranted Value Engineering (VE) study, and developed VE recommendations for projects that were studied. I also created a streamlined checklist for the VE Proposals Program and was able to sit in on the initial meetings for the CLEAR lessons learned program. In the Mobility and & Safety Division, I performed crash analyses of corridors and intersections, using TEAAS and crash reports to create collision diagrams. I also prepared several signal design plans using MicroStation. Finally, I used Synchro to analyze small-scale congestion management projects. Finally, I was placed in the Transportation Planning Division for a permanent position, and served as a TEA while this process was ongoing. Here, I designed a survey from the ground up in Adobe InDesign and began utilizing Adobe Illustrator to create appealing graphics. I honed my GIS skills, and began to use ArcGIS Pro in my daily workflow. I learned basic Python scripting to create scripts to automate or optimize workflows within GIS, as well as for data analysis.
Civil Design Intern
In this internship, I was focused on Infrastructure Asset Management. I used PAVER software extensively to project pavement condition needs at the Port Authority's smaller airports in New Jersey.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
This research position focused on Infrastructure Asset Management. I was able to extensively use MATLAB for data analysis, image processing, and curve smoothing. I processed data from Georgia Tech's pavement crack detection vehicle to get an accurate state of pavement condition on many miles of roads across the state of Georgia.
