ASIC design responsible for cellular system timing functions.Back in the very early days, GSM (2G for those younger folk) phones burned their battery in less that 12 hours. When I joined Nokia Mobile Phones, we set about changing that. With a marketing target of 24-30 hours we threw everything at it. We had a shared design for GSM, DAMPS & PDC(JDC) so we hoped to fix them all.... We did some crazy things on-chip that broke many of the rules of the day like gating off clocks to synchronous circuits but the major difference came when we decided to shut down the high powered, high accuracy crystal oscillator that was not only burning power itself but dumping energy into the relatively large capacitive load of the on-chip clock tree. Sadly this would mean that the whole core chip that controlled everything would be dead.... to we created a circuit clocked from a 32kHz watch crystal. With a whole load of system design later, we launched the worlds first cell phone with 100 hours of standby on a standard battery. Needless to say it really upset the likes of Motorola and Ericsson. We also had fun designing a VLIW DSP which managed to perform the cellular codecs and equalisers in 50% less power than using a TI DSP of the era... that managed to upset TI too.
