Assisted regional entomologist in development & management of a large expanding forest pest management program, primarily focused on control/management of the first outbreak of the Gypsy Moth in Maryland that decimated mature oak and hardwood forest stands. Conducted forest stand delineations to characterize suitable habitat and monitored/evaluated gypsy moth population levels throughout four (4) northeastern counties in MD. Analyzed yearly monitoring data to determine and map treatment area boundaries using infrared aerial photography and other available mapping and selected treatment types appropriate for site conditions of each spray block for control of the invasive pest species annually. Assisted in contracting/management of private aerial applicators, and oversaw spray equipment calibration & aerial application of urban & rural spray blocks as an aerial observer flying in a small plane or helicopter, while directing the contractor by radio when to cut on /off their spray equipment and ground crews as to when to move to mark and monitor the next spray block. Acquired/maintained a Maryland Pesticide Applicators License in the Forest, Ornamental and Research categories for 5 years. Supervised day-to-day activities of a staff that grew from 1 employee to >12 employees in a 3-year period, and coordinated with cooperating resource agencies to train and oversee their staff that assisted the MDA during our annual spring spray program. Initiated the development of new population monitoring criteria and procedures that were incorporated by the program Statewide. Organized, facilitated, and provided public education programs to neighborhoods and groups regularly.
