TeamScience@SWOG Training Module 6, Improving Diversity and Representativeness of Clinical Trial Participants, will implement a methodology and accountabilities for actions that drive diversity and representativeness of clinical trial participants and create tools and templates for the study team (PI, Patient Advocates, Biostatisticians, and others) to plan for diversity and representativeness, implement countermeasures against shortfalls, and share results with and engage underserved communities. The methodology has already been defined and training has been funded by Genentech. Training development will be completed by year-end. Training will be rolled out at SWOG Cancer Research Network in 2021 and will build on the 2018 PCORI-funded training on engagement of patient advocates across the clinical trial lifecycle which consisted of five modules. However, in this additional module, the focus is on PI and study team actions that improve diversity and representativeness with corresponding engagement of underserved communities. Alignment of leadership and supporting policies, procedures, and tools will also be addressed.

Co-led $225k PCORI Eugene Washington Award to create training at SWOG Cancer Research Network, a member of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI’s) National Clinical Trials Network. The training focuses on engaging patient advocates in the clinical trials research process and is targeted for everyone in a research organization -- leadership, the entire study team (including principal investigators, protocol coordinators, and others) and patient advocates. The training is called TeamScience@SWOG and has five modules, each 30 minutes or less: Module 1: For Leaders: Enabling, Reinforcing, and Rewarding Patient Advocate Engagement orients Executive Officers and Leadership, Committee Chairs, and Study Chairs to a vision for the engagement of Patient Advocates in every stage of clinical trial research and clarifies their role in achieving this vision. Module 2: TeamScience at SWOG provides strategies and downloadable tools and defines the typical activities of Patient Advocate engagement across all stages of clinical trials. Module 3: Engaging Patient Advocates in the Define, Review, Design Stages explains the specific activities within the three earliest stages of a clinical trial, how Patient Advocates contribute, and how researchers can fulfill the vision for Patient Engagement in these stages.
