About Rick Capitanio

Empowering positive change within the landscape irrigation industry by helping city parks departments, K-12 school districts, universities and colleges, and master-plan communities conserve water and manage resources. Leading the industry towards a sustainable future, our smart irrigation solutions are built on technological innovation, education and partnership. As a consultative leader for over 30 years, success is achieved through education, knowledge and empowering individuals to choose a growth mindset in making a difference for our planet and future generations.Hired in 1988, my first role was as the first Field Service Representative serving the southern Ca market. After-sale, service and support included in the purchase price of the product was a strategic differentiator. Soil moisture-sensing was making headway in the industry as drought conditions in the region amplified the need for technological advances for water conservation. Spanish as a second language and with a background in education allowed me the success in teaching customers how to use the technology. In 1994, I moved up to the position of Sales Manager and help build a team covering California, Nevada and Arizona markets. This continued as expansion moved to the Pacific Northwest and Texas.Prior to Calsense, I was a a Junior High School teacher of life sciences and environmental sustainability. Due to my innovative and creative methods,, I became passionate for the art of teaching and empowering youth to believe in themselves and realize they can achieve all that they desire. Before receiving a teaching degree from Boston University, I joined the Peace Corps to volunteer for the international community engagement program. I spent two and half years in Ecuador, South America, assisting and educating the indigenous people on how to raise fresh-water fish for an enhanced protein diet. A big achievement during this period of volunteering was completely integrating with the local culture and developing a deep understanding of their core needs and raising social awareness for a healthy diet. I successfully helped local farmers build big ponds with machines loaned by the Ecuadorian government, funded by a grant which then helped establish the foundation for a robust export market.Knowledge is power and as climate continues to change and engineering smart solutions for a thirsty world becomes more and more apparent, the time is now to invest in smart technologies and automation with data analytics to better manage our most precious resource: water.
