Develop and administer all refuge operations, including wildlife management, habitat management and restoration, public use and outreach, personnel administration, budget and procurement.Protect and recover the endangered light-footed Ridgeway's rail and California least tern such that their populations become self sustaining. Our team monitors breeding throughout the season, gathers data from the environment, conducts habitat restoration, and seeks ways to improve breeding success. Initiated an effort ArcGis to conduct spatial analysis using historical nesting platform usage.Provide and improve habitat for other threatened or imperiled species like the Belding's savannah sparrow, western snowy plover, green sea turtle, monarch butterfly, and many migratory birds. This resulted in providing habitat for over 70 species of birds.Lead 30 volunteers who contribute an average of 4,000 hours per year to the Refuge while conducting habitat restoration, public outreach, maintenance, and biological monitoring. We also have wonderful partnerships with other government agencies, private companies and non-government organizations who help us with planting events, outreach, environmental education, and trash clean-up events. Despite having limited access to the Refuge, we're able to provide recreation and tours to about 3,000 visitors annually. Our outreach events connect with 1,000s of people when we go out into the community.Foster strong relationships with professors, students, and independent scientists who conduct research on a wide range of land management and conservation issues. Their research spans from the ecology of parasites to the seismic history of our coastal marsh. Resulting in 3 student working on their master's theses and one researcher having published their data in scientific journals.
Wildlife Biologist
Monitored biological resources and assessed contractor performance during an experimental effort to counteract the effects of subsidence and sea level rise. Decades of research has shown that the saltwater marsh at Seal Beach National Wildlife refuge is sinking. This project applied 16,875 cubic yards of dredge material across 8 acres to successfully increase the elevation by 10 inches. Conducted field studies and data gathering to assess biological resources and sediment depths. Made and published maps using ArcMap 10.0. These maps assessed areas which needed more dredge material. This data contributes to $1.5 million of geological and biological research that which will occur over the next 5 years and establish a baseline for future projects of this type. Conceived, developed plans, and lead a team of volunteers and staff to replace 1500 feet of fencing which provides protection to the California least tern from ground predators. Results saved $40,000 in labor costs, simplified fence design to reduce maintenance costs and extended the life of this site by 20 years.Improved and conducted habitat restoration efforts across 20 acres of habitat that had been previously restored but had become inundated with invasive plants.Lead teams of volunteers in conducting habitat restoration, garbage clean-up and maintenance projects.Conduct public outreach by hosting monthly tours and discussing the benefits of the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Collected GIS field data, created maps in ArcMap 10 and submitted a report to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Data hadn't been reported on this subspecies since 1988 and my work lead into a follow up project.Surveyed vegetation to identify and eliminate invasive plants. Ensured guidelines were followed when removing invasive plants to preserve a Native American kitchen midden.Restored wildlife habitat, monitored growth and health of plants, ensuring native plants became self-sustaining.
