I am responsible for defining technical direction for data services (file, SQL/table, object, stream) on top of VMware's distributed storage offering, vSAN. I also define on-disk data structures, file system, and transaction design for vSAN's data services and next generation storage. I regularly publish in internal corporate research offsite, external workshops, patents, and give talks at our annual conference (VMworld).

I am currently working on an awesome storage project that will CHANGE EVERYTHING :)

I co-designed and built an application security system. My work had a large impact on all the components of the system and provided a constant push to move the product as a whole to the next milestone.

Cupertino

I worked on storage research and software engineering for the Apple kernel-level file systems group in Cupertino. I did performance evaluation of Fusion Drive. I worked on several storage initiatives to extend the capabilities of Apple's logical volume manager to support block cloning and faster meta-data management. I worked with other Core Storage engineers to make major changes to Full Disk Encryption to improve security for SSDs.

I was a Ph.D student. I led teams comprising masters and undergraduate students to design, implement, and benchmark innovative new ideas for the storage and systems communities. This led to papers published in major conferences and workshops (see my publications). I also helped my advisor successfully write NSF grants based on work I was doing as well as form collaborations with other professors in the department which resulted in successful publications in HotStorage and VLDB.

T.J. Watson (Yorktown+Hawthorne)

I worked with my colleague and close friend Charles Wright on an experimental supercomputer architecture. I had the opportunity to learn about how the CPU was engineered, and wrote and ran a highly parallelized mathematical computation on the first working set of fabricated CPUs. The computation I worked on was a benchmark required by the contract with the client to verify the machine's performance met specification for a particular workload.

I worked with another then-intern (Russel Sears) on a client-side appliance that would facilitate fast sync semantics and potentially other transactional semantics for an NFS-type filer.

I was one of seven students working to found a small startup around emergency physician scheduling. We all met in undergraduate software engineering (CSE308). My role was to help design and build the scheduling engine used by our web service using a simulated annealing cost optimization heuristic. The project completed and the hospital bought our product and uses it even today. I left but Tal Eidelberg was able to further grow and expand the company.
