The personal and social costs attributed to illiteracy are widely recognized and documented throughout the world. The pedagogy and products used extensively in schools today to teach reading and spelling in the English language, work very well for up to two-thirds of the student population, preparing them for gaining the qualifications required to service commerce and industry. The remaining third (e.g. >280,000 in Republic of Ireland) experience failure from a very early age, not because they have limited ability, they simply need to be taught using a different approach. Only a small percentage receive learning support and the rest are left to struggle on. The myriad of remedial solutions on offer are mostly designed by well-intentioned academics with no personal experience of the problem and incredibly, most of the products and services used to remediate the problem are those that failed the students in the first instance.WordsWorthLearning © is an online version of a remedial literacy program specifically designed to address the learning styles of the one third of students that require a different approach for learning to read and spell. The author Rita Treacy, who has 30 years clinical experience as a Speech & Language Therapist, was identified with dyslexia in first year at Trinity College Dublin on the way to gaining a BSc. (Hons) Degree in Remedial Linguistics. The program uses the unique strategies and rules she used to overcome her own literacy difficulties. It is “phoneme” based using speech sounds (not phonic) and has been used successfully in her Consulting Speech & Language Therapy Practice since 1996. The programme has results-based evidence with independent statistical analyses. It is a browser based program (not an APP) and works on PC/Tablet/Smartphone. Lessons are taught via 104 video tutorials (with supporting graphics) with 330 interactive reading and spelling exercises to consolidate what has been taught.
