My project:Understanding the impact of presynaptic correlations on spike triggered averaged inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs) recorded in vivo in the locust optic lobe.The objective:To explain an anomalous firing of postsynaptic LGMD (locust lobula giant movement detecting) neuron before the pre-synaptic spike times.Work highlights:Using MATLAB, I created two presynaptic spike trains correlated in time having a Poisson distribution which simulated the extracellular recordings from the medulla of the locust brain.- Next, I designed an ‘integrate and fire’ postsynaptic neuron (simulating the intracellular recordings from LGMD neuron), connected to the presynaptic neurons through an alpha synapse.- Finally, I calculated the spike triggered average of the membrane potential of the post-synaptic neuron.- I also designed an electrical synapse (between the pre and postsynaptic neurons) using NEURON to see if the electrical connection works better than a chemical one.
