About River Thompson

I'm River! I'm a graduate student at Emerson College in Boston. I'm working on my Masters degree in Writing, Literature, and Publishing. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am an English major with a concentration on writing, editing, and digital publishing and a minor in philosophy. I excel at both copy editing and developmental editing. Both skills I have honed through my degree, as well as multiple internships.I interned for TIPS Technical Publishing as an editorial intern. I copyedited, proofread, indexed, slugged, and assisted in ebook conversion. I used track changes in word as well as Adobe InDesign for edits and design assists. This job taught me new skills and honed previous ones through hands on application to real works TIPS went on to publish. I was immersed in the use of different style guides such as ANA, AMA, FEB, CMS, and an in house style guide. TIPS greatly improved my technical editing and manuscript beautification skills.I interned for The Social Talks and HER Campus UNC, platforms for worldwide commentary and journalism pieces about current events as well as social media. These roles involved mostly copy editing and focus on grammar and syntax, as well as teamwork and communication skills in order to meet deadlines and speak to authors about edit suggestions.Various other writing and editing skills come from editing for Idiosyncrazy and a UNC course run by the director of Bull City Publishing. Idiosyncrazy is a literary magazine involving acquisition, edits, and a final vote on which pieces to publish. The Bull City course allowed students to lead the publishing process on a new book by a Bull City author. The Bull City course, life writing course, and creative non fiction course from UNC all involved developmental edits and suggestions via workshop and author queries. These courses immersed me in the editing of prose, poetry, and flash fiction pieces as well as familiarizing me with authors leading sales in those genres. I excel at copyediting, proofreading, developmental edits, collaboration, and indexing. I am adaptable and could fit in and benefit any company! My ideal career would involve reading, writing, and editing.

I teach students how to understand the principle of discourse variation by examining different forms of the essay, working with a range of texts to understand how writers negotiate linguistic, cultural, and political differences in a society divided along the lines of class, race, gender, sexuality, language, nationality, and so on, to understand the writer's responsibility to participate in conversations about diversity and to hold themselves accountable for their position and how it influences the conversation, and lastly to identify and work with rhetorical strategies that are typical of the reasoning in academic and intellectual writing.
