My research interests lie at the interface of bioengineering and basic science, taking a multidisciplinary approach to pull apart the basic biology of sensory systems in order to engineer solutions to dysfunction and disease. We actively pursue three primary areas of research, each focused on the biology of the inner ear. These areas include inner ear development, cochlear physiology, and stem cell regeneration. We employ a wide range of approaches to tackle these problems, including molecular biology, protein chemistry, bioinformatics, stem cell biology, electrophysiology at the system, cellular and single ion channel levels, histology, confocal imaging, mutant animal models, and viral-mediated gene transfer. Professionally, I work in a variety of contexts to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in neuroscience. Currently, we are working on many initiatives related to mentoring through innovative Lenses workshops and a Perspectives seminar series plus a training program for graduate students and the framework for a regional mentor bureau. One of the most satisfying parts of my job is directing summer undergraduate research programs supported by NSF and NIH, enhancing pipelines for talented students toward long-term research careers. I also enjoy my time in the classroom as much as the bench, teaching in physiology and neuroscience and in venues targeting K-12 students through graduate students and medical professionals.
