Throughout my international university life, I encountered many different people, cultures, and places. As I studied, I experienced programs that would analyze databases with millions of data points. Every time I was given an assignment that required us to analyze these databases, I found myself curious of how the program actually worked. As a liberal arts student, I had limited opportunities to explore programming and when I did, I was often intrigued by the potential power of analytical programming. This motivated me to learn more about the programs that I have encountered and the ways they could be applied to improve analysis and lead to a better understanding of data. My goal is to apply data analysis and programming to develop tools that will improve society’s implementation of digital solutions to improve lives. For example, I spent three of my undergraduate years in Japan, which is perceived to be a highly advanced, technological society. However, as I spent more time there, I was startled by the archaic nature of Japanese banking and financial transactions. Online banking and digital payments have a very low adoption rate, with a majority of transactions conducted in cash. This is the perfect example of a complex problem that could be analyzed with the tools I have learned through BrainStation. In the future I would like to apply the knowledge I am gathering in data analytics to problems like the archaic Japanese banking system to identify solutions that will make societies and systems more efficient and improve the quality of life.
