Mel is a caring and resourceful Chemical Health Counselor with a demonstrated ability to create trust and rapport with clients who struggle with substance abuse. She is skilled in assessing the client's needs and implementing appropriate treatment modalities. She is an empathic Alcohol and Drug Counselor and group facilitator with well-developed listening skills. As an enthusiastic and insightful professional, Mel is committed to helping her clients achieve their potential. In addition, she brings her own personal recovery experience to her work.Mel offers an alternative, non-12 Step approach to chemical addiction counseling. She is trained in Motivational Interviewing, and is knowledgeable on a variety of modalities and philosophies including, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the work of Charlotte Kasl, and Stephanie Covington's holistic approach to women's recovery. Mel's work focuses on the interconnectedness of trauma and shame with chemical addiction. She is an avid learner and continues to explore new theories, research and approaches to assist her clients, such as the recent, compelling studies identifying chemical addiction as a brain disease.Mel holds a BA Degree in Education from the College of St. Catherine and an AS Degree in Addiction Counseling from Minneapolis Community and Technical College.
