Hot Jazz Saturday Night (HJSN), which airs 7:00-10:00 P.M. on Saturday nights [big surprise there, eh?] is devoted in the main to vintage jazz and swing from the 1920s-1940s, with excursions into popular music from the beginning of the twentieth century. The program also features repertory jazz bands from the 1940s to the present, that play faithfully in older styles. The program was withdrawn from the station's schedule in June 2018, but restored in September 2020.Now, more than forty years after HJSN first aired, there are far fewer listeners for whom the music featured on the program was a lived experience. However, the program has never been about “nostalgia,” a concept which I believe encourages fuzzy thinking about the past. The premise of HJSN is that the appeal of the music is timeless, that it can be just as “firsthand” now as it was 70-100 years ago. It has always been my primary objective to attract new listeners to the vintage jazz and swing, blues and popular music from the first half of the twentieth century. It's kept in the air by being kept on the air; in so doing, I’m confident that this music will continue to find new audience and adherents, and will survive us all.Each week's program streams for one week after it airs. I have provided historical background along with advice and recommendations in choosing historical recordings from jazz and popular music (pre-1950) to documentary filmmakers, concert producers, and event planners. Responsible for responding to Congressional inquiries related to various issues in U.S. and international energy policy, including demand and supply, price, vehicle fuel economy, energy emergency preparedness, and federal spending on certain programs. Wrote and maintained balanced and objective reports analyzing pending legislative proposals or current policy. Performed peer review and Senior Division Review to check colleagues’ memoranda and reports, ensuring conformity with CRS policy regarding balance and objectivity. Served as Section Head for seven years (rotating position).

Motion Picture, Broadcasting, And Recorded Sound Division [Library Of Congress]

Principal writer and editor of a study mandated by the National Recording Preservation Act (P.L. 106-474) on the state of recorded sound preservation in the United States. Identified witnesses and panels to appear at public hearings held in Los Angeles (November 29, 2006) and New York (December 19, 2006). Interviewed and spoke with experts nationwide on the transfer and preservation of recorded sound media in both the analog and digital domains, and on development of “best” practices for sound recording preservation, proper storage of sound recordings, development of metadata to be stored with digital files, and problems faced by libraries and institutions in developing sound preservation programs.
