Producer/Host, "Hot Jazz Saturday Night" [Www.Hotjazz.Org]
CurrentHot Jazz Saturday Night (HJSN), which airs 7:00-10:00 P.M. on Saturday nights [big surprise there, eh?] is devoted in the main to vintage jazz and swing from the 1920s-1940s, with excursions into popular music from the beginning of the twentieth century. The program also features repertory jazz bands from the 1940s to the present, that play faithfully in older styles. The program was withdrawn from the station's schedule in June 2018, but restored in September 2020.Now, more than forty years after HJSN first aired, there are far fewer listeners for whom the music featured on the program was a lived experience. However, the program has never been about “nostalgia,” a concept which I believe encourages fuzzy thinking about the past. The premise of HJSN is that the appeal of the music is timeless, that it can be just as “firsthand” now as it was 70-100 years ago. It has always been my primary objective to attract new listeners to the vintage jazz and swing, blues and popular music from the first half of the twentieth century. It's kept in the air by being kept on the air; in so doing, I’m confident that this music will continue to find new audience and adherents, and will survive us all. Each week's program streams for one week after it airs.
