Terrestrial Ecology Research Group (Terg)
In Plymouth University, I assisted with some research looking at the invertebrate fauna of oak (Quercus robur) canopies and found some interesting results when comparing isolated trees to continuous cover trees. Also trees that were established along field boundaries/ hedgerows experienced an "upwelling" of invertebrate diversity likely to be from the hedgerows beneath.I participated in various summer camps like Workshop under the Sky in Plymouth while venturing out to schools to teach youngsters about insects and how to catch and identify them. I also went out to a nearby rocky seashore to help teach teenagers about intertidal marine organisms. These activities were all as part of Plymouth University’s Outreach program and facilitated by Peter Smithers. Peter Smithers devised a way to incorporate craft into educating children about the anatomy, life history and ecology of insects. I assisted regularly with this and really enjoyed working with the children involved.
