Group Leader of Electronics System Design Group within Technology Department. I manage a group of 27 Electronics Design Engineers carrying out System, Board & FPGA level design for Big Science DAQ applications.We are involved in a number of major International Science projects such as the Square Kilometre Array, the European XFEL, The European Spallation Source, and Particle Physics experiments at CERN. Additionally we work on major on-site facilities such as the ISIS Neutron Source and the Diamond Light Source.We also instrument high rate Image sensors devices developed by our Divisions ASICs and CMOS Imager Design Groups. We are currently working on systems which readout a single image sensor at 320Gbit/s and we are actively working on 1TBit/s readout for future sensors.Our applications are typically based around the latest high end FPGA devices for signal processing and 10G Ethernet for data transport. Systems can range from a single FPGA to extreme DAQ systems with many thousands of FPGAs with multiple 10G/40G/100G links feeding large CPU/GPU/FPGA processing farms.We have an active DAQ R&D program where we aim to apply the very latest Electronics and Optical Transceiver Technology to Scientific Instrumentation based around the latest FPGAs and 40/100G/400G/800G Ethernet and beyond.
