Short term contract based position on the Gorgon LNG Project working for KJV representing the client’s interest regarding negotiation for variations to the original scope of works within the site preparation contract. My duties included liaising with client representatives on site to assess claims by the contractor for variations, negotiating with the contractor to ensure that the client received the best value for money and making recommendations to higher authority as to which vehicles within the contract should be used to make payment for changes to the scope of works.

In the UK I made an inter-company transfer to work on an excavate and cable lay contract in the Utilities Division within Enterprise for the main energy supplier in Scotland. My tasks included preparation of bills for the client, profit and loss accounting, negotiating with the client for dispute resolution and compiling a CVI register for variations. I was dealing with 8-12 claims per day.

Working on the Highway Maintenance contract in Area 3, south of England, as part of the commercial team I worked within the structures division where I issued subcontract enquires and works orders, negotiated and approved payment applications and compiled target price projects based on NEC form of contract. I attended weekly depot meetings to ensure that there was a smooth link between the commercial and operations teams, liaised with engineers, purchasing, environmental and the client. Also programming works with the planner, compiling risk registers, managing the works, issuing early warnings and compensation events. I was involved in the final accounting process upstream and downstream after a period of fiscal stimulus. Managing in the region of 5-10 projects at one time.

I gained this position for the work based learning unit of my Foundation Degree in Construction Engineering. I found this job in house building very challenging because I had joined the company during the UK summer season when the work load and company output was at its highest level. I had to learn very quickly with little guidance the day to day operations within the company. Although it was challenging, I feel that this was an excellent experience which gave me a great working platform to progress in my career.
