About Rob Hoff
I taught psychology at Mercyhurst University, Penn State - Erie, and the University of Minnesota, and I chaired the Psychology Department at Mercyhurst for 45 years. I also was a member of the Physician Assistant Department at Mercyhurst. Until I retired in 2021 my primary research areas included the perception of emotion in music, long-term and stable music preferences, post-traumatic growth, and the mirror neuron system of the brain. I continue reviewing manuscripts for publication in two APA journals: Psychological Trauma and the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts. I host and produce jazz and world music programs for our regional NPR affiliate WQLN as well as for WETF in Indiana. I serve on the Board of the Erie Philharmonic and take great pleasure in working with the Artistic Advisory Committee.

I love teaching and feel privileged to teach a wide variety of courses including health psychology, psychopharmacology, history of psychology, abnormal psychology, intro to psychology, behavior modification, and psychology in film. I find that the threads running through these diverse offerings include evolutionary psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Recently added to the repertoire is a graduate course in the Psychology of Healthcare for our Physicians Assistant program and forthcoming is an advanced course in Translational Behavioral Medicine.

While at the American Museum of Natural History I was privileged to be mentored in behavioral endocrinology research by such world-class scientists as Dr. Ethel Tobach, Dr. Lester Aronson, and Dr. Madeleine Cooper. A major focus was on the neural and hormonal influences on sexual behavior in the male cat, though I also learned such skills as how to do forebrain ablations on Tilapia macrocephalia (the African mouthbreeder).
