The Home Office Jul 2012 - Feb 2014
    London, United Kingdom
I was a member of the Border Services Procurement (BSP) Technical Architecture team at the UK Border Force. The team was involved with the tender of a major new contract to look after the UK's eBorders systems and then converge them into one system. My role on the team was primarily to work with existing suppliers to collate and manage the production of documentation to describe the current eBorders systems, in alignment with the UKBF's Due Diligence procedures. I designed, created and maintained an indexed library for these documents to be stored in, which was all designed to be portable, so bidders could view the documentation, and also releasable in many tranches for different procurements and stages of those procurements. In addition to that work, I produced documentation and diagrams, at both a technical and management level.

I designed, wrote and delivered training courses to teach the theory and system management of military command systems.Prior to these training courses, I authored a series of Cue Cards for a Royal Navy system and also wrote a manual for a 'guard' that sits between three existing military systems. In addition to this, as someone with expert knowledge of the system, I assisted in the writing, implementation and troubleshooting of test scripts.

  • Atlas
    Configuration Management
    Atlas Jun 2008 - Dec 2008
    Bracknell
ATLAS is a consortium between EDS, Fujitsu, General Dynamics, EADS and Logica CMG; set up to produce a new IT system for the whole of the MoD, called DII.I was involved in creating a way of documenting and recording how the different subsystems of DII were built and delivered to site. This involved the production of a complex Excel spreadsheet, and coding in VB for some background functions of the spreadsheet (such as the production of flow diagrams from spreadsheet data). I also wrote a Work Instruction for the operation of the spreadsheet, and was involved with the planning of the training required for its use, and the delivery of two informal training courses.

  • United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (Ukho)
    Training Management Consultant
United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (Ukho) Jun 2007 - Dec 2007
    Taunton, Somerset.
UKHO employed me to re-write their training strategy as follows:• I identified an increase in time efficiency and decrease in cost if UKHO obtained training from just a handful of companies working in partnership with them, rather than members buying training off the shelf as and when they need it, and also if this training took place on site at UKHO. I investigated suitable companies and arranged contracts with the preferred choices.• I set up an E-Learning suite, which involved planning and creating the room’s layout, arranging a booking system, marketing the facility and arranging a contract for E-Learning software.• I helped procure a Learning Management System.• I helped modify UKHO’s annual review process for their staff.• I identified courses linked in with each core competence, assessed annually with the formal review process.• I completed a design draft for a new internal website. I worked with web designers to create and launch this website.• In conjunction with the website and PDR process, I created posters to be placed around the UKHO site to try and create a training culture.
  • Alfred Mcalpine

  • Awe
    Technical Author
    Awe Oct 2006 - Mar 2007
I managed and wrote technical documentation and manuals for both the server and desktop sides of a new security accredited computer network. I also documented the necessary procedures to look after these systems in the future. In addition to this, I helped out with the migration of users from the old network to the new network, namely in the areas of planning and statistics.
  • Awe
    It Training Consultant
    Awe Apr 2006 - Oct 2006
I worked with AWE to improve their training management system and its associated processes.• Data Cleanup. I organised and managed a cleanup of all course data held within the AWE training database system. This involved sorting through over 1300 courses, speaking to the trainers and training managers to gather data, and then leading a team of 8 people to process the data. Our progress was constantly fed into a macro driven Excel spreadsheet, giving visibility of the task to anyone concerned. We completed the task before the deadline that I was set and I received much praise for the organised and efficient manner in which I undertook this task.• Storage of Training Materials. When I arrived on site, training material was stored in various locations across site, either in hardcopy or softcopy format. I created a space on the network that could be used to store information, formulated rules for its use and dictated a folder structure. I then communicated this to the business and assisted in getting training material stored in a logical manner.• Process Documentation. Within the training department at AWE there are five main job categories and each has its associated tasks and processes. When I arrived on site, these were carried in people’s heads, and often only one person knew how to do each job. I decided to document all their processes to make job descriptions and divisions more clear cut, and to aid new members of staff joining the team. I interviewed everyone within the department and learnt a lot by working in their offices with them so that I was able to complete this task.• Data Migration. In April of 2007, all AWE training data was moved to a new database system. I was involved with preparing the business for this move by ensuring that training data was compatible, and that the processes carried out by everyone across site mapped into the capabilities of the new software.
  • Eds Defence Ltd
    It Trainer
Eds Defence Ltd Jun 2001 - Apr 2006
    Hook, Hampshire
    • IT Trainer. I was solely responsible for designing, developing and delivering training courses for hardware and bespoke software that our department supply to the MOD. These systems were quite complicated, and it was my job to put this information across to the operators of the IT systems in an easy to understand manner. The IT systems covered areas such as command, mission planning, intelligence, and guards to link systems together. One of my main specialist areas was our customisation of C2PC (a COTS mapping system), creating a command system that was effectively an electronic “bird table” (as it's known in the Army). I created this course, including all supporting material, and then trained it all over the UK and to Germany. I had to perform the initial course creation in two weeks, having never seen the software before (I then improved the course over the following months as I taught it). I managed this task to the very tight schedules placed on me and the course was a success. My role required me to fully understand all technical and operational aspects of the projects that I was involved in. This understanding enabled me to analyse training needs and then design and produce courses. I was also required to answer detailed technical questions from the customer whilst on site and delivering training, as well as liaise with the customer regarding potential improvements to our products. In addition to my work in training, I also helped our technical author to write and maintain technical manuals for the systems.
  • Basingstoke College Of Technology
    Teacher
Basingstoke College Of Technology Dec 2000 - May 2001
    Basingstoke
I worked in the IT department, teaching adults basic computer use, including the European Computer Driving License (ECDL). I was responsible for classes of a variety of abilities and ages, supervising on site E-Learning sessions, and also for creating training material.
  • Dera
    Scientist / Mathematical Modeller
    Dera Jul 1999 - Dec 2000
    Farnborough
I worked as a graduate Research Scientist and Mathematical Modeler (SO grade) in the Weapons Systems sector of DERA, an agency of the MOD. I used Physics and Maths coupled with computer simulation to model the effectiveness of future air-to-ground weapon concepts for attacking mobile targets, and produced reports and documentation presenting my findings. I was responsible for developing and maintaining these models, working in a team of five people. Our modeling was performed using Matlab, and the data gathered and analysed using Excel. My findings were presented using both written reports and presentations.
