About Rob Mitchelmore

I build things. Usually, but not necessarily, software and networks. In my time, amongst other things, I've done: unorthodox integration with proprietary databases running on IBM RS/6000s; building simulators for naval radio equipment for training purposes; writing database-backed web applications; designing temporally-based narrative databases; designing the Magic "scriptable datacentre" system; designing and running an abuse feedback system; integrating SMS into XMPP messaging; writing a virtual ethernet driver for a Macintosh emulator; proofreading and editing technical documentation; and video editing. In other words, I make computers sit up and beg.Specialties: lateral thinking, problem solving, system architecture, UNIXy systems, ethernet, systems integration, languages

Systems Engineer

Current
May 2024 - Present

Architect

I design systems to make life easier day-to-day. This has included a collaboration platform based on WebDAV; advanced, content-sensitive email routing; backup and resilience systems; and tools for web developers (such as version control and rollout management).

Software Engineer

Amazon Web Services / Twitch

I do useful things with network state.

Sep 2015 - Jun 2024

Ph.D Student

Horizon Doctoral Training Centre For The Digital Economy

I built and evaluated a cross-platform/plastic mobile user interface framework based on the linguistic notion of 'case'. I evaluated it in a series of industrial settings in which, slightly to my surprise, it worked very well.Other projects included: building a cheap rapid-prototyping platform for RFID applications, helping design a little ubiquitous data logger based on an IDS Microchip RFID logger, co-authoring a giant hypertextual poem exploring the nature of notational systems, and building an image editor designed for collaborative use in a display ecology context.

Sep 2009 - Oct 2015

Purveyor Of Fine Technological Systems

Windswept Information Technology

I solve technical problems for people. Some recent successes: - A versioned, scalable, very simple DNS management system. - Roogle, a cultural probe using a mockup of a search engine that judges the user. - A set of software instrumentation for a train simulator, to record driver reactions to different stimuli (for science!). - Homerphone, an art project about the transmission of oral poetry in an age of pervasive telephony. - An umbrella that knows where it is and tells your computer, so when you inevitably lose the accursed thing you can reclaim it from whosoever's house it is in.- I am one of few people who have written homebrew software for the JXD3000 games console.- A system for building 'critical editions' of video games, analogous to those made for novels or texts. Two things I'm working on: - The Calculogue, an exercise in comparative programming. This project consists of the implementation of an interpreter for a small programming language in a number of different programming languages. The idea is that it should be possible to compare programming languages with a bigger 'sample text' than just 'hello world'. The interpreter is big enough to introduce non-trivial features, and demonstrate how actually software engineering can be done with different tools. - BGP IPv6 rollout for a Hosting and Internet Service Provider

Cto

Instantvue

Nottingham

I'm responsible for overall architecture and technical decision-making within InstantVue; not just with regards to software, but with regards to photographic equipment, network architecture, mobile devices, etc. This requires significant mental fleetness-of-foot, the ability to learn things fast and a sense of humour.

Apr 2010 - Jun 2012

Chief Systems Architect

Bluesquare Data Group

During my time at BlueSquare, I did a large number of different things; mostly involving designing software or procedural systems and then handing them off to other teams to run. Larger examples are:Magic: A datacentre management system. At its very lowest level, provided "a scriptable datacentre" for automatic management and monitoring; at the highest, provided a control panel for users to control and modify their own server deployments and address allocations. Gory technical details in "Projects", below.BSQ-RT: a temporal narrative database cunningly disguised as a ticketing system. Allowed non-human systems to raise issues on the same footing as humans. Used not only for technical support but to track changes to the "stories" of all kinds of objects. Gory technical details in "Projects", below.Abuse: I ran the abuse queue for several months, during which I rebuilt the processes for abuse management from the ground up and built software to assist in the abuse management process. This also involved interacting with a wide variety of people - people with legitimate complaints, people with silly complaints, angry people, spammers, and the police. Storage: I was responsible for the design and rollout of a SAN/iQ based iSCSI SAN, designed to provide high availability and reliability to unmanaged and potentially untrusted clients.Other projects I was involved in: VMware ESX-based Virtual Machine platform; KVM-based virtual machine platform; major router platform upgrade project; rollout of second metropolitan 10G ethernet ring (including the optics); rollout and customisation of new company-wide billing system.
