• Assist Dr. Abby Whittington with her research project titled Polymers in Tissue Regeneration• Evaluated the most effective to fabricate alginate-based hydrogels.• Assess the effects of subjecting the hydrogels to various methods of freezing, drying, and rehydrating.• Prepare hydrogel and gelatin samples for long-term radiation testing, and track results.

• Compile data for approximately 20 different variables relating to the generation of wastewater treatment residuals, and perform analyses to determine which variables could be better controlled to reduce residual production.• Work with Operations and Process Control to develop several PI ProcessBook Display screens to assist the Wastewater Treatment Plant operators run the process efficiently.

West Point, Va

• Worked with hourly, salaried, and corporate personnel to gather and analyze information to complete and submit 3 major reports to government agencies. Developed new ways to improve and expedite the procedure to complete these reports.• Performed a daily review of the mill’s emissions data to ensure the mill’s continued compliance with permitted emission limits.• Developed a live emissions summary used during the daily shift meetings to show the mills emissions for the past 24 hours, and indicate any compliance issues.• Lead a trial to determine the effectiveness of removing the ash from wastewater stream to the mill’s waste water treatment facility. Trained and coordinate 3 other interns and summer students to collect samples, run lab analyses, and record the results where they could be viewed by other mill personnel. The trial was a success, and it was estimated that if the mill were to move forward with the project, it would lead to yearly savings of approximately $500,000, and well as reduced mercury emissions.
