About Rob Shepherd
I am a Chartered Engineer with a solid back ground in Research and Development. I have a blend of experience in electronics, software and mechanical design, as well as an enthusiasm for innovation and technology. I would consider myself, a very hands on and practical person, with a never say never attitude.I have a very broad depth of technical knowledge in areas such as telecommunications, RFID, artificial neural networks, nuclear systems and thermodynamics. Most recently I have applied artificial intelligence to determine the location and size of a leak from a naval nuclear reactor. This technology is then applied to an operator advisory system, enabling the operator to observe real time data relevant to the leak, such as: location, size, suggested action, and the facility to examine all the sensor data. The break through in this research is being able to differentiate and identify leaks separated by 2g/s at levels between 12 and 28g/s (at 200ºC, 100bar) through an orifice between 0.05mm² and 0.26mm².My PhD has combined all my skills through the design and construction of a mechanical high temperature and pressure rig to replicate these parameters from a nuclear reactor primary system. My electronic knowledge has enabled me to select appropriate sensors for leak detection, make safety protection systems and configure the infrastructure to work with a data acquisition device.
