About Robb Hamilton
Robb Hamilton is a Web Developer and User Experience Designer, User Experience Lead at Red Hat. Colleagues describe him as "Robb is an outstanding designer, employee, and friend. Robb has a natural, keen eye for what looks good, pays incredible attention to all the detailed aspects of an interface, and will always champion the user's needs, desires, and expectations. In addition to producing meticulous visuals, Robb will look at the big picture, immediately spot holes in designs and experiences, and find elegant ways to fill in the gaps without derailing progress. His work ethic and high standards inspire others to keep up, and he is a great resource for everyone around him. Most of all, Robb is a joy to work with. I can't recommend anyone higher than I recommend Robb, and I'm sure he will become a valuable asset to whatever company he joins next." and "I had the pleasure of working with Robb at iContact for almost three years. Robb proved to be one of the most capable individuals I worked with. Period. Irrespective of skill set. Stacking him up against designers, front- and back-end developers, and product managers, I'd be hard pressed to find any more talented than Robb. A company looking for mature, expert-level skills in UI design, web development and leadership should seriously consider adding him to their cadre of web professionals. One of the key skills a leader needs is the ability to influence people without exercising direct authority. Robb did this many times; the one that I've chosen to highlight here happened in the Fall of 2009. The technology iContact used, at the time, to animate rollover effects within its web application was an antiquated solution using JavaScript. It worked, but its inelegance showed up any number of ways: it was tedious to maintain; it was slow; it relied upon unnecessary http connections; and it scaled poorly with our needs. Robb, as the company's expert in this technology, presented his case for migrating this solution to one powered by CSS. People knew he was right, but the work never got prioritized. Robb didn't give up. Instead, he adjusted his strategy for arguing his case. During some development downtime, Robb led a small team to create a powerful prototype of his new solution. Not stopping at the prototype, he presented metrics that showed, concretely, the benefits iContact would reap when it migrated to the newer solution. Upon seeing the clear benefits the new solution would bring, the work got prioritized, and Robb soon delivered everything promised. As an organization, iContact has Robb to thank for introducing a new solution that improved our users' experience and the technology it relies upon. Another skill that separates great leaders from others, and Robb from his peers, is the ability to exert quiet, sustained influence on coworkers. Though Robb wasn't iContact's first full-time designer, he was the first designer considered a leader by his peers. Pre-Robb, designers knew one skill set, and developers knew another. During Robb's tenure at iContact, developers went from being naive “experts” in front-end web development, to recognizing their own skill gaps, and finally, to being able to learn about, and contribute, solid, standards-based front-end web development on their own. I know this first hand, as my job at the time was managing the team with Robb and the developers. Robb was able to transform the collective skill set of the team in a number of ways: he taught; he critiqued; he provided resources for self-learning; but, most of all, he set the standard that others followed."
