Everyone has a great story to tell. I believe strongly in the idea that a community's people, their culture, and their array of diverse memories and perspectives are some of the greatest assets we have. I've had the great opportunity to serve small and rural museums across the country during my career. As a graduate student in 1993, I had the chance to meet staff members and volunteers from museums, galleries, and libraries in South Carolina through their participation in the South Carolina State Museum's traveling exhibitions program. Each person I met amazed me with their commitment to community, resourcefulness and resilience. Often in small towns and often with few financial resources, each person made an impact on their audiences and studied, protected and preserved the character of their communities. Seeing their passion made me passionate about them and their work. It's an honor today to be able to work with them to bring Smithsonian resources to their hometowns.
