40Nm Node Manager, Design Technologies
Project Manager
Managed multiple chip development programs consisting of marketing, and IC design, software, product, test, and applications engineering organizations. Led managers of these functions from product concept to initial production of the network communication controllers that comprised the leading edge of the highly successful family of PowerQUICC products during this time. Responsible for schedules, financials, and interactions with initial customers. Facilitated collaboration across disciplines and organizational boundaries by coordinating and motivating respective managers.
Product Manager
Managed product engineering and program management resources within the Personal Computing Systems Division responsible for PowerPC microprocessor products. Introduced the "Max!" G4 processor sold to Apple for Macintosh computers. This was the first 0.18 micron copper CMOS technology (HiP5) product manufactured by Motorola, and was responsible for debugging the technology before other new products could be fabricated in it. Presented regular progress results to Apple and other customers during the course of successful qualification of the G4 and HiP5 process technology. Ensured delivery of product to enable successful customer product launches.
Technology Introduction Manager
In addition to failure analysis lab responsibilities below, was responsible for an engineering team unique within Motorola that performed those product and reliability engineering functions required to introduce the first product in each new generation of CMOS process technology. Reported directly to division general manager. Collaborated with leaders in the wafer process factory (MOS 13), the R&D pilot line (APRDL), and the design center (Somerset) to debug 0.25 micron and 0.18 micron process technologies during the course of PowerPC microprocessor introductions.
Failure Analysis Lab Manager
Managed a lab that grew from 3 engineers to over 30 during my tenure. This lab became recognized as the pre-eminent CMOS VLSI failure analysis lab within Motorola, as lab results were critical to the introduction of each new generation of 68000 and PowerPC microprocessor products, as well as to the introduction of each new generation of CMOS process logic process technology in Motorola factories. Developed core management skills: · planned and set goals annually · organized the lab to best focus on our internal customers · staffed the lab with quality engineers and technicians · directed lab activities via communications, motivation, and leadership · resolved problems as they arose.
Failure Analysis Engineer
Began career as one of only two engineers responsible for identifying the cause of failure of 68000 family of microprocessors that were returned from customers or representative of manufacturing yield fallout. Developed a methodology for systematically isolating microscopic defects in VLSI microprocessors where no such capability existed in the lab before.
