Robert Banfield, Ph. D., is a Trimble Distinguished Engineer with two decades of experience in Machine Learning. He began his career with the Department of Energy Defense Programs on the Advanced Strategic Computing (ASC) Visual and Interactive Environment for Weapons Simulation (VIEWS) creating optimized Machine Learning algorithms for nuclear weapons simulation on US supercomputers. His research and publications from that time have been cited more than a thousand times in other academic works. He was the first employee of a new startup company, Weogeo, a Trimble acquisition in 2014 and which remains a key component of the Trimble Cloud division. A cloud computing pioneer and finalist in Amazon Web Service’s inaugural StartUp challenge in 2007, he developed the first usage-based automatic scaling algorithm for virtual machines on EC2, which Amazon would integrate directly into Auto Scaling Groups. Decorated with several innovation awards both from Trimble and external organizations, he presently focuses on Deep Learning, specifically contributing to Sketchup’s Autoshape, Sketchup’s next generation image and text search, and various other computer vision and natural language processing applications throughout Trimble. With his passion for teaching, he is not only an internationally sought-after speaker on Machine Learning and delivered keynotes, he has taught AI at university and even Computer Science at the local high school. He has also hired and mentored those who would become Distinguished Engineers themselves.Outside of Engineering, Robert is a poor player of the piano, a used-to-be scuba diver and pilot, and a current skydiver with an instructor rating. He currently resides with the GPA 2023 hot dog eating competition champion greyhound and undeniably good boy.
