Test & development of HEV/BEV powertrain systems for heavy-duty, commercial vehicles.Roles & Responsibilities:• Overall management & delivery of Vantage Power’s numerous test & development programs.• Planning, execution, analysis & reporting of testing; from vehicle-level down to component-level.• Design & build of test-rigs.• Li-ion cell, module & pack testing using Arbin & Bitrode test-benches & programmable PSUs/loads.• Test team management (two direct reports).• Creation of risk-assessments and H&S documentation for test facilities/rigs & test activities.• Upkeep of test lab & maintenance/calibration of test equipment.• Led Failure Reporting & Corrective Action System (FRACAS) for customer & test vehicles.Significant Accomplishments:Nov. 2019 – Dec. 2021: I led the main testing activities during the development of a prototype heavy-duty HVESS, culminating in a successful 12 week long program of pack-level performance validation testing at UTAC Millbrook's battery testing facility. I also led the development & operation of a rig to characterise the performance of the battery thermal management system, & worked with an external test house to conduct shock & vibe testing of the thermal management system.Nov. 2018 – Feb. 2019: I led the testing phase of a project to demonstrate the concept of a novel heat pipe-based battery thermal management system. The test results contributed to a successful Innovate UK grant application, to enable further development of the technology, and were also published in a peer-reviewed journal.Apr. 2018 – Nov. 2018: I led the track testing & final commissioning of a BCI Enterprise 2HD bus, equipped with VP's Euro VI hybrid powertrain, prior to customer delivery. I was also responsible for the successful completion of all tests required as part of the Cummins IQA and Hybrid Approval process.Nov. 2016 – Mar. 2017: I led the track testing and commissioning of VP’s first six hybrid retro-fits, prior to customer delivery.

Development of a prototype, grid-scale, thermal energy storage system.Roles & Responsibilites:• Used Solidworks and ANSYS Mechanical/CFX for design and analysis of components and assemblies used in a prototype grid-scale energy storage system.• Created detail drawings using GD&T in accordance with ISO standards (129, 5458, 5459, etc.) & liaised with supply-chain, and in-house/external workshops to facilitate component manufacture.• Conducted inspection and approval of manufactured components using CMM and manual inspection tools.• Conducted testing of components & sub-assemblies.• Supported in-house manufacturing of parts using manual machine-shop tools, CNC machines, and TIG welding.

Design and manufacture of a Formula SAE car for the 2010 and 2011 international Formula SAE competition.Roles & Responsibilites:• Designed, manufactured and tested the 2011 car's anti-roll bars and significantly improved their performance compared to the previous year's design.• Competition driving and on-track testing of the cars.

Researching the properties of superfluid 3He at ultra-low temperatures (sub 1 mK), especially under the influence of impurities and nanometer scale confinement.Roles & Responsiblities:• Running of sub-mK experiments on a dilution refrigeration equipped with a PrNi5 demagnetisation stage.• Working in a cleanroom, carrying out nanofabrication of experimental cells.• Day-to-day running of research group’s laboratory, including supervision and training of graduate and undergraduate students working within the group.
