Robert Berkowitz is an internationally recognised paediatric ear nose and throat surgeon particularly in the area of neonatal and childhood airway disorders who has successfully combined innovative clinical work, administration as a department head at two major hospitals, basic science and clinical research and teaching, while at the same time maintaining a busy private practice over nearly three decades. Robert holds numerous academic appointments. He has secured a number of research grants totalling around one million dollars, including a grant of over a quarter of a million dollars from the NHMRC. He has published around one hundred scientific articles, predominantly in major US medical journals, on a wide range of topics covering both clinical medicine and basic science research. He sits on a number of international Editorial Boards, including the prestigious journal Annals of Otology Rhinology and Laryngology. In addition to writing fiction, undertaking a range of community activities and continuing his work at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Robert is pursuing his interest in medical quality assurance and has recently taken up a newly created position as a clinical advisor to AHPRA, investigating complaints against surgeons. He has also provided expert opinion on a number of medico-legal matters.
