Startup, Manufacturing Inspection SAAS

This was an early stage startup developing advanced techniques and hardware for 3d inspection, and manufacturing process control where I was employee #1 responsible for software design and development. I personally architected a variety of controls systems, data pipelines and visualization tools while also managing the efforts of a team of consultants. The software stack varied greatly and included: microcontrollers developed in C, high performance data processing in Native C++ with GPU acceleration, UIs in C#, 3d visualization with OpenGL and embedded UIs written in JavaScript.

I took over a loosely organized team of engineers developing the software for a large set of precision laser processing systems, established agile processes, and encouraged ownership while growing the team to 12 direct reports and 4 additional contractors. Prior to my arrival the team’s resources had been pulled on an ad-hoc basis largely driven by the politics of the latest emergency leading to significant disfunction. To turn things around I had to quickly gain technical proficiency on existing architectures, establish project teams with leaders and sell new processes to the business unit.

This company was an automation integrator where I designed and developed software and systems for precision automation equipment in close consultation with various corporate customers. Systems were developed under tight schedules with strict budgets and varied in application from consumer electronics to biomedical.

After leaving the operations organization I was hired as a consultant on the engineering side to develop a wireless (edge device, Access Point) configuration and security provisioning system. -PKI Secure Association, -C#, -Java, -Windows Forms, -Perforce, -IPsec, -IPV6, -WAN & LAN

I grew and led a small team of engineers responsible for the development of the software and systems used to perform automated tests and configurations of secure wireless mesh RF devices. This role was defined by the challenge of managing a pipeline of device types and configuration options that was large and changing on a near day to day cadence. The testing ranged from simple rf power measurements to cell tower simulation. The configuration challenges ranged from provisioning with customer specific IP tables, to securely signing device certificates. Software was primarily written in C# with a splash of Java and high availability databases, IPV6. PKI, IPsec and HSM signing.

I created a high-speed automatic nano-scale inspection system. *This company was forced to drastically scale down as the 2009 recession took hold right after my hiring. C++, .NET, COGNEX Vision, UV Microscopes, Precision Positioning Stages and Controllers

Litrex was a division of ULVAC Japan. I was responsible for the development of software controls for precision flat panel process equipment used by corporations such as Samsung, LG and Panasonic. I was an early member of the engineering team and involved in the architecture and development of almost every part of these systems that were required to hold micron level accuracy across as much as a meter of process real estate. I am most proud of a high-speed, automated, in-situ industrial inkjet drop-analysis system that I created the controls, data processing and imaging tools for. The software was primarily developed in native and managed C++ in the context of precision motion control, vision systems, distributed video streaming, precision calibration, and high-speed timing.

Here I developed a broad range of semiconductor process measurement and control systems using technologies such as spectroscopy, machine vision and precision sensors. I spent a good deal of time in the Semiconductor fabs of Taiwan, then was based in Dresden Germany for 2 years (’99-’01.)
