May be assigned to one of the following sections or may rotate among these, as directed by mission requirements.: Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry, Urinalysis, limited semen analysis, clinical microscopy, and limited Microbiology to include various rapid test kits, gram stains, and culture setup. Performs manual and automated procedures. Maintains awareness and complies with regulatory requirements, safety regulations, and ethical standards of practice. Correlates laboratory tests to disease processes and understands basic physiology recognizing appropriate test selection and abnormal test results. If necessary, prepares reagents utilized in the test procedures. Reviews results of routine work for technical accuracy or obvious errors. Repeats tests and examinations where obvious test errors are apparent, values achieved trigger such action (as identified by internal SOP), or critical value limits are exceeded. If patient reports have been released, corrects the error in a timely manner and ensures that all patient care personnel are notified and that all paperwork has been corrected (up to and including the patient’s chart). Occasionally requests supervisory assistance.Receives samples and specimens of tissue, blood, urine, stool, sputum, and other body fluids. Checks that all specimens are properly and completely labeled; assures proper requests (hardcopy or Composite Health Care System (CHCS) computer orders) and correct specimens (i.e., type, amount, etc.) are submitted with all required information. Contacts the appropriate clinic, ward, or regional medical facility laboratory when specimens are incorrectly identified or submitted. Contacts health care providers for additional needed information and/or patient history to ensure that proper testing and interpretive data are received. Show less
